Welcome to Carousel Players’ 50th Anniversary Season!
In this half-century of creating and touring theatre for young audiences, we have traveled all the way to the moon and back! And as we turn fifty, we’re asking ourselves: Who Are We Now? It’s a fitting question at the centre of this celebratory season, as we all emerge from the pandemic and come together to create theatre anew and meet our audiences again.
This question of identity is at the core of each of our shows this season. In the new digital play Meet Chloe written by Cameron Grant and directed by Marcel Stewart, a high school student struggles to ensure her identity is honoured within the education system. In our Mask Explorations project, we empower students to express themselves and discover creative identities through mask performance. With our new musical adaptation of The Velveteen Rabbit, a treasured toy discovers their true identity through the love of a child. Pop! Pop! playfully explores an undersea environment and asks “who are you?” in this new performance for very young children. And in our returning production of Tomson Highway’s cabaret for kids, The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito, identity means freedom to be who you are and to share your gifts with the world.
Through the time when we’ve all had to stay at home, we’ve been dreaming of new characters and stories to share, and exciting ways to tell those tales. More than anything, we are eager to connect with audiences, with children and parents, grandparents and grandkids, caregivers, youth and educators. We’ve missed you! It’s through the vital connection of live theatre that we’ll all find out who we are now and what we can do next. We can’t wait to find out!
See you very soon!
