Carousel Players’ theatre school attracts enthusiastic students each summer from ages 5 to 13 years. Students experience many aspects of the performing arts during the sessions offered. All summer drama classes are led by professionals from the local and regional theatre community.

Carousel Players is excited to announce that Summer Theatre School will again take place at The Robby, 85 Church St, 2nd floor in downtown St. Catharines.

Classes are Monday to Friday 9 am to 4 pm, with extended care provided from 8:30am to 4:30pm, upon request.

2017 SUMMER CAMPS & LEARNING OUTCOMES

BEGINNER

Theatre Explorer
July 10th– 14th
Ages 5-7
$250
This class is designed to introduce children to the imaginative world of theatre. Participants will learn how to bring a creative world to life and create fun characters within it. Campers will develop skills in creation, participation and performance.
*This camp features a performance on the last day
Learning Outcomes:
-Build Confidence in Performance and Creation Skills
-Cultivate Social and Participation Skills through Ensemble Work
-Inspire Creative Thinking and Dramatic Play
-Nurture Reading and Writing Skills in Theatrical Creation
Musical Theatre Explorer
July 24th-28th

Ages 5-7
$250
This class is designed to introduce children to the vibrant world of musical theatre and the creative process. Participants will engage skills in character development, movement, body awareness and singing. The culmination of the week will be a presentation of a short musical piece highlighting ensemble singing, dance and storytelling.

-Build Confidence in basic Acting, Singing and Dancing Skills
-Cultivate Social and Participation Skills through Ensemble Work
-Nurture Imaginative and Creative Play
-Inspire positive and respectful body image

 

INTERMEDIATE

Acting & Playwriting
July 17th– 21st
Ages 8-10
$250
This camp will focus on skill development in a variety of aspects of acting & playwriting. Participants will have the chance to learn about different genres of theatre, through games, creative writing and scene work. Students will work towards writing their own monologues and short scenes, creating characters and scenarios from their explorations in dramatic play.

Learning Outcomes:
-Build self-confidence in writing and performance skills
-Learn how to create character and write for them in a compelling way
-Build upon acting skills through various acting techniques and exercises
-Nurture ensemble work and positive peer support

 

Art of Puppetry & Mask
July 31st– August 4th
Ages 8-10
$250
This camp offers hands-on craft work in building puppets and masks, with guidance towards using both forms in performance. Participants will experience various performance techniques and exercises to bring their creations to life. Each camper will engage their imagination in writing short plays for their puppet and or mask to come alive in. Skills in concentration, physical control and expression, vocal strength and articulation, as well as group and individual dramatic creativity will be explored.

Learning Outcomes:
-Learn technical and theatrical mechanics of puppets and masks
-Cultivate skills in creating character and dynamic storytelling
-Build confidence in vocal and physical work
-Nurture ensemble work and positive peer support

 

ADVANCED

Shaw Acting Camp
August 8th-18th
Ages 11-13
$425
Kids will have a ‘Wilde’ time in this 9 day summer adventure for advanced dramatic arts students. The camp will challenge participants to strengthen their acting skills and create their own original play. Students will attend a performance of Wilde Tales at the Shaw Festival on August 10th at 11:30 am. Included on this special adventure to the Shaw Festival will be a backstage tour and acting workshops led by professional artists.

-Build Confidence in Improvisation, Storytelling and Performance skills
-Learn a Variety of Acting Styles and strengthen Individual Techniques
-Cultivate Playwriting skills and Understanding of Devised Theatre
