We are pleased to welcome Toronto artist Jordi Mand as Playwright in Residence for our 2015-2016 Season. This position is integral to our company’s new play development mandate. We would like to acknowledge funding support from the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the Government of Ontario, in supporting this initiative.
During her 20 week residency with Carousel Players, Jordi will develop a new piece for young audiences under the working title: This Will Be Excellent. The piece will focus on two characters who are struggling to maintain good grades at their elementary school. Through the need to identify their own uniqueness, the two characters’ journey towards a philanthropic outlook that has reverberations into their community.

The playwriting residency includes meetings with Carousel Player’s new Artistic Director, Jessica Carmichael, who will provide feedback and workshop support of the work-in-progress. Jessica is eager to work with Jordi and reflects that her “tenacity, curiosity and passion are emulated in her work to date with intelligent and daring results.” She affirmed that Jordi’s proposal “is one I wish to support in its development. I believe that determining one’s own self-worth is an important life study to express from a young age. A theatre work, such as the one Jordi is proposing, can aid intuitively in this conversation.”
Jordi Mand is a Canadian based playwright. Her second full-length play, Caught, will premiere as part of Theatre Passe Muraille’s 2015/2016 season in Toronto. Her first full-length play, Between the Sheets, has been produced across Canada and internationally. Shorter plays include: The Speedy (World Stage Festival/UnSpun Theatre), Right of Passage (Theatre Yes), The Knot (Tonic Theatre). Jordi is a Playwright-in-Residence with Theatre Passe Muraille and Carousel Players. Jordi is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada.
